How to improve your Website's SEO Score?

As mentioned before the SEO score of a web page is an average of its Speed, YSlow, Readability and Accessibility scores. So to improve your SEO score you need to improve each of these individual scores as explained below.

Speed - fast websites are important. The slower the website the less time someone will spend on your site, this is known as a short click. Google does not like short clicks as it indicates that the user has not found what they are looking for.

Google will increase the ranking of websites that produce long clicks, this is where a user spends a long time on your website and doesn’t immediately return to the search results. Therefore a website visitor mustn’t give up waiting for your web page to load.

To get a better speed score first fix any YSlow issues mentioned in your report. While this will solve a lot of issues it won't solve a slow server or low server bandwidth. Remember to choose a test location near to where your server is located.

To get a Speed 'A' grade a website needs to completely load in one second.

YSlow - Yahoo!'s Exceptional Performance team has identified several rules that affect web page performance. The YSlow web page analysis that GrabzIt performs is based on those rules that are both testable and relevant. Once these rules are implemented on your website it should improve the overall speed of your site, which will also help to improve the Speed score above.

To get a YSlow 'A' grade fix the issues listed in the YSlow Overview section of your report.

Accessibility - this is based on the issues identified from your web pages adherence to the WCAG standard. However, unfortunately it is impossible to create a completely automated WCAG score so instead we have our grade of accessibility based on what we can test automatically.

If a page is not accessible then people who are impaired in someway may give up trying to read your website, which may increase the number of short clicks being recorded by Google for this your website.

To get an Accessibility 'A' grade fix the issues raised in the Accessibility Overview section of your report.

Readability - unfortunately, the average reading ability of a person in the United States is of twelve to fourteen-year-old. A similar situation is present in other countries. If a person is struggling to read a web page they may well leave it quickly increasing the number of short clicks it is receiving and reducing your ranking.

Therefore to get a Readability 'A' grade aim for a reading age of between 12-14 by writing using words that are accessible to these age groups. This will mean that restricting the use of larger more complex words and ensuring that sentences are not too large.
